Dog crate size chart

This dog crate size chart shows standard wire crate sizes and who they typically fit. For growing puppies, the finder above gives a better recommendation than a static chart alone.

How we estimate crate size

We keep the recommendation simple on purpose: combine a practical dog crate size chart with clear crate divider guidance, then tighten the answer if you add age or measurements.

Most puppies do best in a crate sized for their adult body, not their current size. A crate that's too big makes house training harder. A crate that's too small needs replacing.

The standard approach: buy an adult-sized crate and use a divider to limit the space while your puppy grows. Move the divider back as they get bigger.

When adult size is uncertain — mixed breeds, rescues, or puppies with unknown parents — this tool estimates from current weight and age, then tells you how confident the estimate is. For close calls between two standard sizes, it shows both and recommends the safer pick.

Quick questions people usually have next

Use these to sanity-check the recommendation when you are still on the fence.

Should I buy a crate for my puppy's current size or adult size?+

For most puppies, buy for expected adult size, not today's size. That usually means you buy once and use a divider to keep the usable space appropriate while your puppy grows. If your puppy is already closer to full size, the divider may matter less.

Do I need a crate divider?+

Usually yes if you're buying the adult-size crate now and your puppy is still young. A divider keeps the space snug enough for house training, then moves back as your puppy grows. If your puppy is around 6 months or older and already close to the recommended fit, you may not need one.

What if I don't know how big my puppy will get yet?+

Use the current weight and age path. The result is a planning estimate based on standard growth patterns, and the page shows a confidence signal so you know how firm the recommendation is. If the estimate is broader or your puppy is near a size cutoff, use it as a starting point and tighten it later with measurements.

Why does this tool sometimes show two crate sizes?+

That means your puppy is close to the line between two standard sizes. The main recommendation is the safer starting point, and the second size is there so you can see the tradeoff instead of guessing. In close calls, extra room can usually be managed with a divider, but a too-small crate cannot.

How do I know if a crate is too big for my puppy?+

The clearest sign is enough extra room for your puppy to eliminate in one area and settle in another. That is why oversized crates can slow house training. If the crate itself is the right long-term size, adjust the divider rather than replacing it.

How do I know if a crate is too small?+

Your puppy should be able to stand without crouching, turn around without struggling, and lie down without folding up tightly. Head and ears should clear the top. If your puppy is right on the edge, compare interior dimensions rather than relying on the size label alone.

Is the crate size chart enough, or should I use the calculator?+

Use the calculator first. The chart is helpful for a quick sanity check, but the calculator handles more of the real decision: breed, adult weight, current weight and age, divider guidance, and close-call sizing. If you have measurements, add them to tighten the answer further.
